International architectural competition for the construction of a “House of Peace”
Location: Geneva (GE) / Client: Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales et du Développement – IHEID (CH) / Surface (net) : 11’246 m2 / In collaboration with Julien Woessner / Opencompetition, short list
The Peace: symbol of a fragile construction
The project takes the form of a constructed junction that organizes urban travels and renders the academic space an urban pole of reference, where the public and the academic world interact.
The “House of Peace” starts with a tower which gives it a presence in relation to the dominant size of the surrounding buildings. Composed of varying forms issued from the geometry of the site, the tower represents the fragile equilibrium of peace.
The project’s position integrates the academic spaces at the level of the public walkway, and concentrates the institutional space in the tower. A lived-in square welcomes the passer-by and allows him to return from the different levels to the continuity of the city.
The vertical system accommodates the rest of the program, alternating between levels of office and levels of meeting spaces which open on to welcoming terraces.
The variation of forms on the levels around the central core generate, at the exterior, a multitude of terraces that can accommodate vegetation, and in the interior, meeting spaces that inhabit expanded corridors.
A uniform modular framework accommodates offices and meeting rooms of diverse size, assuring maximum flexibility. The framework of the façade is fixed; it is the depth of the offices that varies. This framework offers an additional surface of 13% for the same constructed volume.
