An open cloister
The whole school is designed as a building devoted to education and as a meeting place open to the city. It can be defined as an architectural and functional entity integrating with the existing buildings.
The ground floor houses the extra-curricular program (library, dining hall, multi-purpose room) arranged around the courtyard, promoting their autonomy and their participation in the life of the neighbourhood.
Service to the school is organized around this urban island by an ascending walkway, alternating exterior views and views into the interior. Around this courtyard the educational area is divided on the two upper levels, an extension of the existing classrooms. Inside the existing building, the administrative department is clearly separated from the educational area. The installation of all of the administrative functions clearly shines a positive light on the main entrance to the existing school.
The whole project is organized around an “open cloister”. The space is extroverted at ground level, and is contained at the level of the classes.
Three bridges on tinted concrete piles span the large transparent spaces. In the centre, the open courtyard, a place of conviviality, dons a permeable and flexible surface, extending the idea of continuity of the city.
