CLIMAX
International competition for the extension of Musée des Beaux-Arts
Location: Berne (BE) / Client: Municipality of Berne (CH / Open competition
A journey between city and museum
Independent atmospheric zones… varying climates
The project is fixed in the geometry of the existing volumes and its form determined by the existing lines of orientation. It unites the three parts of the museum forming a complete entity.
The interior circulation placed strategically between the three programmatic parts, offers signals towards the city. Its smoothness invites visitors to discover.
A simple and functional volume installed in the ground forms the main new interior space. The protective concrete envelope isolates and insures the conservation of the art pieces. Set almost entirely in the ground, the new construction fades from ones view, bringing the existing museum façade to the forefront.
In the interior of this large space, independent atmospheric zones work to moderate the differing climates according to the needs of each exhibition piece. The regulated cells use a membrane to control and preserve the fragile pieces. These membranes, inflated when needed, allow an optimal modularity.
The exterior of this construction becomes a support for artwork. The emerging volumes present themselves like an exposition of pedestals at the scale of the city. In this way the museum overflows into the public space offering contemporary art to the citizens.
