Construction of a pedestrian footbridge on the Rhône (CH)

Site: Le Grosse (VS) / Owner: Etat du Valais (CH / Open competition/ second phase

Traced a horizon in the valley

This footbridge provides the opportunity to open impressive views, perpendicular to the “grandiose” landscape in the Rhone Valley. It’s position in the site, responds pragmatically to the linking of the two sides, recognizing all its specificities.
With a length of 274 m, the work consists of two sections: one facing upstream, and the other pointing downstream. These two parts rely on eachother by an element of rollover, allowing a reading of the Rhone in its length. This span of perpendicular linkage returns the situation, putting in scene in the feeling of the valley, alternating views of the

Its variable geometry organizes the pedestrian and bicycle traffic all by preserving the “stop” spaces at different heights, allowing for a dialogue on the readings of the landscape at different scales. Its materiality consists of a simple beam at pile, on which connect by adhesions a molded profile, developed along the entire length of the bridge. These elements support vegetation that mask and orient the visual vistas of the majestic trajectory of the Rhone.
